Law360, Springfield (October 3, 2016, 10:05 PM EDT) — An Illinois federal judge on Friday ordered immigration authorities in Illinois and five other states to stop asking local law enforcement agencies to detain suspects longer than they would normally be kept in custody in order for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to be able to arrest them.

Judge John Lee’s order sided with a certified class of immigrants, granting the plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgment against the Department of Homeland Security, which operates ICE. Congress granted DHS and ICE the authority to detain suspected aliens…
