Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and 11 other senators urged the Department of Homeland Security on Monday to freeze planned private detention facility procurements pending an internal review of the use of private contractors for immigration detention.

In a letter from Democratic and Independent senators to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, the lawmakers criticized the continued use of private immigration detention facilities and expressed concerns that recent statements about their importance by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Sarah Saldaña may indicate that the outcome of the review…
